Charlotte Stuart is an heiress dedicated to charitable causes who's been betrayed by the false love of a fortune hunter before. Ridiculed by Paris society for her mistake, she vows never to fall victim to the weakness of love again. Driven back to England by the collapse of the Peace of Amiens, she enters London society and meets Lord Edward Woodcliff, a handsome Viscount in straightened circumstances. Falling for him means risking being humiliated again.

Edward has come to London to find a wife. Made leery of marriage by his father’s disastrous second marriage, Edward feigns poverty in order to find a woman who loves him and not his wealth. He loses his heart to the independent and spirited Charlotte, but her fear of being betrayed, and his hesitation to make a matrimonial mistake, prove difficult to overcome.

All seems hopeless until Edward challenges Charlotte to a wager. If he wins, he gains her hand in marriage. If he loses, then Charlotte is free of him. Charlotte accepts the wager only to lose her hand and her heart to Edward. Now Charlotte must put aside her fears of being betrayed by love long enough to let Edward into her life and admit he is the man of her dreams.

Lady's Wager was previously published in 2008. The emotions are heightened and the internal conflicts deepened in this new version of my clean Regency romance. 50,000 words.

Just ok.

Charlotte is determined to never fall in love again. She is still upset that her former fiance only wanted to marry her for her money. Meanwhile Edward is a very rich young man, but he saw what kind of woman money attracts when his father married his step mother. So when Edward goes to London looking for a wife, he pretends that his finances are in poor straits, hoping that this will attract a woman that loves him for him, not for his money. When he meets Charlotte, he hopes she is that woman. But with Charlotte's stubborn determination to never fall in love again, how will he woo her? And even if he can, will she ever forgive him for lying to her about his finances?

This book was only ok. I didn't care for either of the main characters. Edward was a huge jerk the entire first half of the book, and even though he got nicer in the second half he was still lying to Charlotte's face on a daily basis. And Charlotte was kind of annoying with her constant insistence on independence.

The story itself moves along at a slow pace with little to no sub plot. The supporting characters were boring. At least there were little to no typos. But it still took me three weeks to read this short novel, a sure sign a book just isn't holding my interest.

For free I guess it was ok, but I wouldn't recommend wasting hard earned money on it.

This was the first book by Georgie Lee that I've read and I really liked it.

I'm unfamiliar with the Regency period so I don't know if the book was true to the time period, but I did find myself transported back in time to when society was completely different in regards to its ethics and customs.

I liked the love story of Charlotte and Edward and liked both these characters, and I loved the supporting characters too, even the dog Minnie was lovable.

I found this book to be an enjoyable light, sweet romance with some amusing moments, and I finished the book quite quickly.

Definitely a recommended read, particularly if, like me, you don't usually read this genre.
I really enjoyed this sweet recency romance as the main characters had more depth to them than the usual type of recency heroines. All the characters were appealing and the historical background was very interesting, medical matters, art, charity fund raising etc made it a well rounded out story.
I thoroughly enjoyed Lady's Wager. Charlotte and Edward's romance really drew me in and had me wishing and hoping that they could work out their very real differences (and since it is a romance, we know they will, but still the author made me worried for them). The author did a great job of showing us the Regency world with accurate details and precise description. I love the author's heroines - Charlotte is spirited and had her own opinions, interests, and goals. Edward is everything you want a Regency hero to be - passionate, smoldering, and above all, a gentleman. I've read a number of this author's books, and she never disappoints. Can't wait for the next one!
I really enjoyed reading this Regency historical. The heat level is sweet, but the chemistry is there between the main characters so the tension remains high. The story is rich in historical details (art and medical) and the conflict is not flimsy or solved/dismissed with a conversation. The characters leapt off the page as I read, as they were well drawn and motivated. The secondary characters also helped develop the story and didn't detract from it in the least. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
If you're not reader of historical romances, you probably won't notice the glaring errors of the era. Unmarried young ladies didn't dance three dances with the same man without being engaged. They also didn't wear "red" to Almack's, entertain "apothecaries," openly show an interest in science or read medical books. They certainly didn't publicly raise funds for medical institutions.

The story itself, is "OK," nothing special. I just found a lot of it to be unbelievable for that period in history. Charlotte is so unconventional, it's a wonder she's allowed in polite society. Her aunt and uncle want her to marry and she's determined not to. After one bad experience, she thinks all men are after her money, especially the poorer ones. She spends her time fund raising for medical equipment and ignoring the rules of London society. (And for some mysterious reason London society doesn't ostracize her.)

Edward's father wants him to marry and tells him not come home without a wife. Edward is determined not to marry a woman who's after his title and money so he pretends to be poor. I found it a little hard to believe that this very rich man, got everyone in London to believe he was suddenly poor. Naturally Edward decides he wants Charlotte and she doesn't want a "poor" man. He lies to her right from the start and continues to do so throughout the book. Then he's surprised when she finds out he's not poor and rejects him. What on earth did he think would happen?

Overall it's not a bad book, just not a great one.
This was a free download. I am glad I didn't pay the 3.99 price. This novel had some possibilities, but it lacked basic Regency facts. Some things just didn't ring true for the era. The h was much too forward and opinionated to be accepted by the Ton. There was some clever dialogue in places and parts were entertaining.

However, much of the events would not have happened in such a public way. The h would never dance three times with the same man in one evening. Family members wouldn't have been so public in pushing the H/h together. It was an ok read.
