Dear Mom, I don't know where to start, Michelle certainly struck gold, she found the end of the rainbow and it was golden. I watched two young men join the ranks of our Army Air Corp, in 1943. They could have been anyone of the thousands of young men, that were torn from the warmth of their families lives. The story of their efforts was inspiring, the faced failure in some tasks, and success with the same steadfastness of spirit. Even when they were down about something, they seemed always to find a bright side. Jack reminded me somewhat of one of my Uncles, Tom though, was my favorite, if it were possible to have favorites. He seemed to always to have that character, that motivates, and leaves and example, one that you would want to be able to rise to the occasion, and follow.Michelle, I hope you know how much this book really means to others besides your family. I laughed with these boys, I understood when they were exhausted. I marveled at them, you are so lucky to share that blood. I looked closely at the pictures, and my heart ached, that after all that, they were unable to come home, and wrap their arms around that family they so loved.
I just finished the last pages a few minutes ago, I lay the book aside, I was reading in bed, I turned over and tried to go to sleep. Sleep would not come, so I got up and came downstairs to my computer, to tell you my feelings of your effort. I cannot tell you, how many tears that were shed, Jack only had 19 missions, I know something of warfare, one mission is one too many. but Tom, 62, and his last was the one to rob us of this brave man. I enjoyed the final contacts with the 2 families in Holland that watch over Jack, that kind of love, we need more of in this world.
There is so much more I would like to say, but,, finding the words is difficult, so, I will just thank you, sincerely thank you, for sharing this story of your family. It is a special family. Tom got to come back to his country, that he loved, I so enjoyed his thought on freedom and government and the political world, he was so wiser than his 23 years. But Jack, still on a foreign soil. I have a friend I was with in Viet Nam, that was never recovered, so that touched me. thank you again.

I found it very hard to keep track of all the people in the book!
Touching and accurate. Michelle Cahill recounts the travails of her two, newly-discovered uncles through their letters home; both pilots who sacrificed their lives during WWII, wonderfully brought back to life as young, vibrant, caring men by Cahill.
I purchased this book for my 90 year old Mom.
She cannot stop raving about it!
She said she felt like part of the family the author was writing about.
I will see her soon and will be looking forward to reading the book!!
A well-written and timeless reminder for all of us of the many sacrifices that others have made for our country, that enable us to live in freedom, and enjoy each day.
This collection of letters from Mary Cahill's sons, Tom and Jack, is a wonderful tribute to their strong moral characters and selfless service. I get some comfort knowing that despite the war and very difficult situations these young men were able to experience some joy in their travels and people they met. The numerous photographs remind us that this is a real family. My son serves on a USS Navy destroyer. We communicate via email, iMessage and satellite phone even when he is underway. Technology has improved but a mother's worry, longing and love is timeless.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The author states that compiling it was a labor of love and it shows. This book is much more than just a group of letters put together to make a book. It is a very personal glimpse into the lives of everyday people during WWII. The reader becomes part of the family looking forward to each letter. I was amazed at how well written the boy's letters were and how clearly they illustrated the lives of servicemen during that time. Some of the letters detailed the camp antics that helped pass the time and relieve tension. Those letters immediately reminded me of the T.V. show M*A*S*H*. Other letters were more serious and showed the boy's concern for the welfare of the family members they left at home. The letters I found particularly sad to read were the ones where Tom especially, wrote of his plans for after the war. I must say I had a few tears while reading the epilogue.
The author did extensive research to learn as much as she could about her uncles and their military units. She did an excellent job of summarizing her research at the end of the book.
Next, I'm going to read Tom Brokaw's book, "The Greatest Generation" and see how it compares to this book.
This book is a window into the lives of airmen during WWII in the European theater. Michelle shares her family treasures - the precious letters to and from her uncles during WWII and family photos. I am so glad I read this book as I learned so much about the flight training, living conditions, eating and socializing of the servicemen during the war. I am not one to read war-related books, but this one was so interesting and well worth the read. It was written in a coherent, cohesive manner and well-researched. By the end of the book, I felt like I knew the Cahill family. Hats off to Michelle Cahill. Thank you for this great read!
