I have done a lot of Internet research about worm bins and I decided to buy this book to get a start to finish guide. I already had a plan in mind for the bin I would use, bedding and harvesting. After completion of this book, my entire plan has changed. All of her ideas are well explained and when she goes against other recommendations, she makes so much sense. I am so glad I got this book before I started drilling holes in my bin.I am after the garden gold that comes with composting, but I love her Eco-friendly take. We shouldn't be spending money and acquiring items to recycle. That just makes so much sense. I spent a good part of the day contemplating how often we are being pushed to buy more things to save the planet. But back to the review...
Any questions you have will be answered. Every single topic that I could think of is covered in the book from setting up the bin to what to do with the finished product after harvest.
This book was an extremely fast and very humorous read. I thoroughly enjoyed her writing style.
My worms are on the way and I can't wait to get started!

I have read many worm composting books to determine if I want to get into composting with worms. The has to be by far the best worm raising / composting book I have read. She not only gives you ALL the information you need to know but puts it in a way that is light-hearted and comical. Not often would I expect to read a book on worm composting and have to chuckle and have a smile on my face while reading. I would love to see her composting "farm - for her barn is not big enough for all the saddles the worms would require to ride horses to be called a ranch" and to meet her. I know her outlook on life would be contagious. I highly recommend this book IF you are really contemplating getting into worm composting and keeping your garbage out of the landfill. You will also produce the best compost for gardening money can buy.
Good things first (And there is no shortage of them)
This book is chock full of information, so much so that it's difficult to absorb in a single pass.
* Nearly ALL options are discussed on any given topic, even if the option is a bad one in the author's opinion.
* The recommended options are geared toward minimum effort and cash outlay for maximum (reasonable) output.
* Book is broken down into useful chapters discussing a single component of vermicomposting. Index helps to isolate specific information you might want.
The Not-So-Good (And a lot of this is just personal preference)
* Chapter titles aren't explicit enough to quickly pick the chapter you need if you're using this as a reference book.
* Not much information on flow through systems. This book is geared more toward your first bin, which is fine. I just happened to be interested in flow through systems as a long term option, and there wasn't much about it.
* I didn't get anything out of the author's attempts at humor. Too much fluff and joking and poop jokes, none of which was particularly funny to me. I'm a poop joke fan, I just wasn't looking for humor in the book, so it felt like a needless distraction. (See what I mean about personal preference?)
There just isn't much in the way of scientific information or citation in the book. Author references "hoity toity science journals" a few times but doesn't offer up any specifics. (I understand there's VERY little research currently available on vermicomposting, but it would have been nice to know what studies HAD been done so they could be looked up later if one were interested. And again, this is mostly a personal preference. When I take up a hobby, I tend to go overboard and start looking for every bit of information I can find.)
So there it is. I've listed some "not so good" pieces, but THE BOOK STILL DESERVES 5 STARS. Is it exactly my style of book? No, not really. The humor didn't do much for me, and calling vermicompost "worm poop," while accurate and not really in any way offensive, puts people who aren't already worm farmers off a bit. People just have a visceral reaction to the word, and though it didn't bother me at first, after 200 pages it became a bit tiresome. My point is... the things I listed in the negative column are fairly arbitrary. The book itself (And I've read a couple other vermicomposting books including Worms Eat My Garbage) is probably the best of the lot. Tons of information, lots of good troubleshooting tips, and a very full understanding of how and why to use vermicompost in the first place.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about getting into composting with worms, regular composting, or gardeners. I have yet to start my own worm bins but feel confident now, with this being the only book I've read on the subject. Sandra did a wonderful job of anticipating what questions new worm composters would have and answers them immediately. Not only does she answer questions but she describes her reasoning into why she does what she does. The comical side of it is a little corny, but helped keep me engaged. Also while she does stray from the topic at hand occasionally she manages to always be on a related topic, and this gives the book a bit more of a conversational feel, helping to engage the reader as well. All in all, it is a lot of information, presented in an interesting and easy to understand manner. If you want to compost with worms, start by reading this book, then decide if you want to read more.
We are setting up a worm bin and of course I waited until AFTER I bought the container - a large oval, galvanized steel, livestock watering bin. I saw a short video of a guy somewhere in Oregon, I believe, discuss his worm bin and was impressed. He didn't go into detail about the specifics as the video was a spur of the moment video who someone else posted upon meeting up with him. This book has helped a lot concerning all the ins-and-outs of a worm bin - what to do / not do. And you can find a YouTube video of a guy whose worms left his bin because of bad conditions. You will have a problem with this book if expecting a "technical document" or bulleted information or even any diagrams or pictures, because there are none - zip!. The information is convoluted with stories and humor. The best way to use the book, at least for me, is to refer to the appendices which takes me back to where I have highlighted important information, though I have high-lighted a lot (because I never know exactly what I need)!
